Samui Overview
The Ko Samui of today is changing however, and the cheap fan bungalows are increasingly hard to come by.Most accommodation is either mid-range or top-end, beachfront properties boasting beautifully decorated rooms, crisp white sheets, lush gardens and lavish pools.

There are cheap food stalls and top-class restaurants, crowded modern shopping strips with Starbucks, McDonald’s and store after store featuring knock-off Von Dutch T-shirts and Gucci sunglasses; as well as stretches of rough dirt roads and ramshackle huts. Western bars dish up burgers and chips and replica rolex watches pump classic tunes from giant speakers late into the night. Lady-boys and beautiful girls in strappy sandals and tight skirts seek out customers in side alleys, while drunken Westerners pound the keyboards at late-night internet cafĂ©s.

Koh Samui has many impressive beaches, each with its own character. Chaweng undoubtedly remains Koh Samui’s most popular resort area. As the island’s longest beach, it is also close to some superb hotels and the biggest shopping and entertainment zone on the island. Here, there are also dozens of restaurants and bars scattered along Beach Road. The area is extremely popular and has developed a reputation as a party zone, with open-air discos and bars aplenty. This is certainly not the place to stay if you like the quiet life as the loud music and raucous behavior carries on into the early hours. The Big Buddha is a huge 12-metre high golden image that was erected in 1972 at the northern tip of the island near Bo Phut Beach. In recent years, it has become a symbol of the island and no visit to Koh Samui is complete without seeing it.
