Then 50km to the northwest sits the Ubolrat Dam, the largest dam in Issan. The west side of the reservoir, known as Pattaya 2, is a good spot to picnic, and there's a golf course on the east side as well as some botanical gardens. About 100 km north, the remnants of a civilization dating back 7,500 years can be found in Ban Chiang. Over 50 human skeletons can be seen in the excavation pit along with many pieces of pottery. The museum on site gives a fine historical record of the Ban Chiang era. And close to Khon Kaen lies Roi Et, affectionately known as "LA" by locals. For some reason, which no one has ever been able to adequately explain about eighty percent of Bangkok's taxi drivers come from Roi Et.
