Chiang Mai Overview
The city of Chiang Mai was established in 1296AD and for many centuries was the capital of the independent northern Thai Kingdom of Lanna and an important centre of Buddhism.ancient heritage is visible throughout the city the centre, which is still defined by the remnants of the Old City walls and protective moat. The city has a long tradition of craftsmanship and it is possible to watch artisans at work in small local factories before you buy; wood carvings and furniture, silver and jewellery, textiles and silks are all part of Chiang Mai’s handicraft heritage. All these goods and more are also on display at Chiang Mai’s famous night bazaar where haggling is all part of the fun. Chiang Mai is a great all-round travel destination with plenty to see and do and activities to suit every interest or energy level. The landlocked city is a big contrast to the southern beach resorts and is a must visit for those wanting a taste of the real Thailand.
Getting There
Chiang Mai is easy to reach by air from any of the major destination inside Thailand. Depending on the time of year there are up to 20 flights a day from Bangkok. The most frequent being Thai Airways and Air Asia, but Bangkok Airways and a number of budget carriers also fly the route.   More >

Chiang Mai is easy to reach by air from any of the major destination inside Thailand. Depending on the time of year there are up to 20 flights a day from Bangkok. The most frequent being Thai Airways and Air Asia, but Bangkok Airways and a number of budget carriers also fly the route. There are also several weekly flights from Phuket and Samui. The city is less well served by international flights but it is possible to fly direct from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Kunming, Taipei or Mandalay. Chiang Mai airport is very close to the city and most hotels are within fifteen minutes away by taxi. There is only one rail route to Chiang Mai, which is from Bangkok. The trains are not fast but first and second-class are comfortable with sleeper beds provided. All the trains have a food and drink service and plenty of guards and staff to attend passenger needs. All the trains leave from Hualampong Station in Bangkok and the overnight sleeper option is the most popular with tourists. Travel time varies, but is usually about 12 hours.

It was at this time that it was slowly incorporated into Siam, which eventually became modern day Thailand. The culture and traditions of northern Thailand, although related to those of central Thailand, are quite distinct in their own right. Lanna heritage is further enriched by the large number of ethnically distinct hill tribes living in the region each of which have their own very different customs and traditions.

Northern Thailand has its own distinctive style of cuisine that was born out of its position on a trading route from China to India. The cuisine is a fusion of these two food cultures with a strong Burmese influence. The Lanna style produces rich curries, spicy curry pastes, vegetable dishes and sai oua, a unique style of sausage. Most savoury dishes are served with sticky rice, which also comes in a sweet version served for dessert with locally grown fresh fruits and coconut milk.

Northern Thailand has three very distinct seasons. The most popular time for tourists to visit is the dry, winter season that runs from October until February. During this time the days are warm and sunny with blue skies and virtually no rain. In the evening however, the temperature can drop quite significantly to as low as 14°C. If visiting in the winter take some warm clothes especially if your plans include overnight trekking in the mountains.
